Why Export to IDML?

Transl8ly works by translating the content within an IDML (InDesign Markup Language) file. This special format preserves your layout and formatting during the translation process. You cannot upload a standard .indd file directly; you must first export it to IDML from Adobe InDesign.

Step-by-Step Guide to Exporting IDML

Here's how to export your InDesign document:

  1. Open Your Document: Open the InDesign (.indd) file you want to translate.
  2. Go to the File Menu: Click on File in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Export: Choose the Export... option from the dropdown menu.
    • (Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut: Cmd+E on macOS or Ctrl+E on Windows)
  4. Choose Format: In the export dialog box that appears:
    • Navigate to where you want to save the file.
    • Enter a file name (it's helpful to include the language, e.g., MyBrochure_EN).
    • Crucially: From the Format (macOS) or Save as type (Windows) dropdown menu, select InDesign Markup (IDML).
  5. Click Save: Press the Save button.

That's it! InDesign will generate an .idml file in the location you specified. This is the file you will upload to Transl8ly.

Important Notes:

  • Save Before Exporting: It's always a good idea to save your original .indd file before exporting.
  • Resolve Issues First: For best results, ensure your InDesign file has no overset text and uses styles consistently before exporting to IDML. See our guide on Preparing Your InDesign File for Best Translation Results for more tips.
  • Compatibility: IDML files are generally backward-compatible (an IDML from a newer InDesign can often be opened in an older version, though some features might be lost). However, always export from the version of InDesign you used to create or last edit the document if possible.
